Vic: Currency plant workers end industrial action

MELBOURNE, Aug 8 AAP - Workers at Australia's only currency printing plant have returnedto work this morning after a 42-hour strike.

About 170 workers at Note Printing Australia's Melbourne plant started industrial actionover issues of bullying and intimidation on Wednesday morning.

Note Printing Australia is contracted by the Reserve Bank to print all Australia'snote currency and also has contracts to print international currency.

Australian Manufacturing Workers Union (AMWU) printing division national secretarySteve Walsh accused the company of harassing workers into workplace change.

He said the union would meet management at the plant next week to discuss these issuesand did not rule out more industrial action.

"We will be having discussions with management next week and we will report back toour members and decide what to do from there," Mr Walsh said.

He said workers had not taken industrial action in 17 years and felt their concernshad been heard through this action.

"The management realise that we're serious and their concerns are very real," Mr Walsh said.

He did not believe the strike action impacted on Australia's money supply.

Note Printing Australia was not immediately available for comment.
