NSW: Two Towers smashes the record of its predecessor
The second Lord of the Rings instalment has smashed the box office record set by itspredecessor raking in $5.2 million on its opening day.
Sell out crowds stampeded cinemas around Australia yesterday to catch Lord of the Rings:The Two Towers as it hit the big screen for the first time.
Advanced sales had taken care of the bulk of the tickets with early morning movie goerssnapping up the remainder.
Last Boxing Day, The Fellowship of the Rings -- the first in JRR TOLKIEN's trilogy-- opened recording $4.1 million and earning it a spot in Australian cinema history asthe largest single days trade ever.
Roadshow Film's chairman IAN SANDS says he's ecstatic that the record's been smashed.
Two Towers opened last week in the US, UK and New Zealand.
